Going to the doctor immediately if symptoms of PID, sexually transmitted infections appear, or after learning that a current or former sex partner has, or might have had a sexually transmitted infection. Risk reduction against sexually transmitted vaginal infections through barrier methods such as condoms; see human sexual behavior for other listings.
Up to 10-15% of women with PID may become infertile, and if a woman has multiple episodes of PID, her chances of becoming infertile increase.
Women can protect themselves from PID by taking action to prevent STDs or by getting early treatment if they do get an STD.
Your doctor will also test you for STIs, including HIV and syphilis (SI-fuh-luhs), urinary tract infection, and if needed, pregnancy. If needed, your doctor may do other tests.
