When you tell your doctor you are having palpitations, it becomes his or her obligation to do two things: a) identify the cause of your palpitations, and b) provide you with the best advice for treating that cause.There are lots of different causes for heart palpitations. While some of these are due to the heart itself, there are lots of reasons outside the heart that can also lead to heart palpitations. The following conditions make you more likely to have an abnormal heart rhythm:
• Known heart disease at the time the palpitations begin
• Significant risk factors for heart disease
• An abnormal heart valve
• An electrolyte abnormality in your blood — for example, a low potassium level
